Clark Lineage
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Our earliest traced relative was Bartholemew (Bartholemeu) Clark, born in Scotland of Irish parentage. Marriage records at First Reformed Church, Lancaster, PA., lists Bartholemew Clark and Anna Schaaf (Schoff) married August 16, 1790. Anna died in1845, leaving a will which gives the following information: 1 Says of Martick Township (apparently a widow). Mentions a daughter Sarah, wife of William McFalls. Refers to money coming to her from her brother John Schoaff, deceased (1813), no children. After death of widow, money to go to his brother and sisters. Granddaughter Mary, wife of Samuel Moore, and the rest of my children: $1.00. Frederick, John, David, Daniel, Barkley (short for Bartholemew) and grandson John Lighthiser to have remainder and be the executor of the will... $ 1.00 each. 2 After the brothers, Daniel and David, emigrated to Lancaster, PA. they married sisters. 3 They emigrated to Starke Co., Ohio and there is where Great [?] Grandmother (Elizabeth Nunamacher Clark) was born, February 16, 1832. Great Grandfather (Daniel) died there. His brother David, took great-grandmother and her family of eight children with his family and moved in a covered wagon to Indiana. Great Grandmother Elizabeth located at what is now Hudson, Steuben Co. In fact, in 1869, she helped plat the town which originally was called Benton. David located about 12 miles East in DeKalb Co. (near Hamilton). Great Grandmother died at Uncle Lewis Clarks home, in Ft. Wayne. 4 Her children, in order of age, were: John - grandfather of the Hudson Clarks... Jay, Freeman, Lee, John, Hildred, and Doris). He was mustered into the 100th Infantry, Co. B - August 15, 1862 and was killed in Atlanta, GA, August 21, 1864. Kate, Elizabeth (Elizabeth Nunamacher Clark), Lewis, Anna, Samuel, Caleb (father of Nora and Edna Clark... grandfather to Ednas daughter Goldie Forest), and Maria (Della Charlton Pikes mother). __________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 Recorded in Will Book T., Vol. I, pg. 554. Register of Wills Office, courthouse. Dated Sept. 11, 1843. Proven March 8, 1845 2 There is a daughter who married a Lighthiser, but in the will there is no definite reference to it. The name is unusual to this section. Only one thing could be found... a will for a Catherine Litehiser [Lighthiser], who died 1845. Judging from contents of the will, she was the oldest child of Ann Schoff Clark, and the sister, Katy, you mentioned in your letters (letters written by Emma Pfingstag to her sister Ida Apel). Her name did not appear in the will because she died a year before her mother made her will. The will of Catherine Litehiser is recorded in Book T, Vol. I, pg. 166, dated Nov. 16,1842. Proven Dec. 20, 1842. Widow: Children: Catherine, Isaac, Susan, Christiana, Henrietta, Wain... each on shilling. All the remainder, including some property, to son John because he had been so good to her when she needed help, and gave her all his earnings to help raise the family. 3 Re: a letter to Emma Pfingstag received from Goldie Forest, there was a statement made that our great grandmother, Elizabeth Nunamacher Clark, was born in Holland, and came over with the second lot of Muscovite Pilgrims and settled near York Co. PA. Her parents were on the mothers side, Baum, and on the fathers side, Nunamacher. 4 Grandmother (Elizabeth Clark Mosshammer) said that her mother had a deed for 160 acres of land in Arkansas. This deed was given to her grandfather (Bartholemew) for service during the War of 1812. The deed eventually was in the possession of (great) Uncle Lewis Clark. Hearsay (thru Fred Ball, son of Stella Clark Ball) is that Lou sold the deed to a firm of brokers (Stults & Co.) in Ft, Wayne. Great Grandmother died at Uncle Lou Clark's home, 125 Monroe Street, Ft. Wayne. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. A.B. Lilly at the U.B. Church in Hudson, IN. |
